Computing For All - Employer Experience

Overview

TalentPortal is ComputingForAll & WA Tech Workforce Coalition's way of connecting companies with tech talent by expanding access to tech job opportunities and providing targeted training and mentorship programs.

Project goals

  • Reduce information overload with a more simplified onboarding flow
  • Clarify lack of intuitive step progression throughout the flow
  • Eliminate the need for unnecessary requirements that are not applicable to the experience

Project information

  • Role Owned: UX Designer & Developer
  • Duration: 8 weeks
  • Tools: Figma

Current Experience

  • Unnecessary requirements that are not applicable to the experience
  • Although some are not required, because they are assigned a step, users are overwhelmed by the misleading amount of information they need to fill out in order to complete the process
  • From our engagement metrics, users tend to drop off during the sign up process when they are required to add a new company which requires multiple input fields

User Anecdotes

  • Upon launch, we reached out to some of our users to gather and monitor their feedback on the employer experience on TalentPortal
  • One user noted: “It would be nice to know what is required versus what is nice to have. Because right now, all i’m seeing is things that I need to complete before I can move onto the next step.”
  • Another user noted some confusion and redundancy around the steps: “What’s the difference between personal info and professional info? To me it, it’s just repeated information. I don’t understand why they are in two separate steps when the professional info seems to be an extension of the personal info?”
  • Furthermore, there were some expressed need for automation to reduce time spent filling out information: “I would like it if we could automate some of these fields. I’m constantly filling out this information and would really like it if I didn’t have to.”

Intended Vision

The intended vision of this project was to:

  • Simplify onboarding experience for employers to create profile on the TalentPortal
  • Reduce amount of information required for users to complete the sign up process

Improved Design Proposal

  • Reduced the number of steps from 7 to 3
  • Improved clarity on stepper component to combine number of steps to the progress bar to let users visualize where they are in the process
  • Combined redundant fields from personal & professional info steps into a single step to reduce confusion
  • Moved all ‘nice to have’ information into an additional info step, where nothing except the terms agreement is required

Next Steps

  • Conduct user research using:
    • moderated interviews to gather qualitative feedback from users
    • unmoderated usability study to validate design efficiency
  • Explore automation patterns such as AI generated content to fields in order to improve efficiency in adding enriching additional information
